Who was Dorothy Draper??  Well, in 1923, she was the first person to actually establish an interior design company, thus making it a true profession!  How cool?

As a true “Interior Designer”, she made huge strides in the field and broke through what was considered safe and common at the time.  She was known to pair uncommon colors and print together, her motto? “If it looks right, it is right”.  (dorothydraper.com)

I love her use of bold contrast in color and prints!

Just a few of her largest and most well know project include the restaurant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, nicknamed “The Dorotheum”, the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia, and the Camellia House, Drake Hotel in Chicago.

Benjamin Moore even came up with a Dorothy Draper color palette and several famous designers such as Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler have done design projects in ode to her as well.

I wonder, what would the design world be like without Dorothy Draper?  Would we be living in boring little tone-on-tone boxes?

One large source of social controversy all around the world is graffiti.  Traveling from city to city you see it everywhere.  It is accepted as an urban artistic expression but viewed as property vandalism and is completely condemned.

But what happens when graffiti is taken off the streets and applied to interiors and thus, used in a totally different application?  Here are some highly creative ways graffiti can be applied in a more “accepted” way.

Black is a color that just never seems to go out of style.  Just like that “little black dress” that has been in your closet forever and can be worn for any occasion, black in interiors can feel timeless, classic, or a little bit daring.

This library below is amazing.  Very creative way to layer the artwork in front of the bookcase.

And this pink chair frame is adorable!  I found it here: http://www.fabulouskblog.com/2011/04/decorating-my-place-pink-chair.html

If my boyfriend would let me have a hot pink painted console I would be the happiest woman on Earth!  Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic, but it would be cute.

Of course I love other colors too, but how striking are these?  Especially with the royal blue!

China

Last year I stumbled upon a global project called the “Let’s Colour Project” and have been following the progress of this movement around the world.

India

It started in 2009 and is still going strong.  The goal is improve the lives of people living in less fortunate parts of the world through color!  Painting  rundown buildings and architectural elements in towns and cities around the world helps give a facelift to these communities.  The paints and supplies are donated by companies to keep the movement going.  Here is the website for more pictures and information.

Neon is definitely in this season, and when neon color meets color blocking, imagine what can happen!!

The trick is to limit how much neon color is used in the room, try to stick to only a few, simple elements: ie paint, window treatments, accessories, light fixtures- don’t go crazy with too much in one room.
