Now that it the crisp Fall air has finally settled in, its time to get those fireplaces roaring again!  I think that sitting in front of the fire at the end of a long day is possibly one of my favorite things.

And because the fireplace is usually the focal point in most rooms, decorating it for the Fall is just one more way to welcome in the best season of the year!  Here are the 3 key elements to a perfectly balanced and festive fireplace mantle…

#1 Centerpiece

Usually a large mirror or piece of art is the best place to start.

#2 Weight

Adding weight to the sides of the centerpiece is necessary to balance out the mantle.   Accessories such as candlesticks or twigs in a vase is a great way to add weight (and height).  Even hanging a collection of smaller pieces of art on the sides of your centerpiece is a creative idea!

#3 Filler

Filler can be anything from books, to smaller plants or vases, or seasonal fillers like leaves or pumpkins!  Usually placing a collection of objects looks great.

I know I am a little late with this, but…. the 2014 HGTV Dream Home is here!  I caught it airing on HGTV and is is absolutely gorgeous!  Can I live in Lake Tahoe please?   I was skiing there years ago and remember how amazing it is!

Of course, being in a ski town, the house should feel cozy and inviting!  I love the rustic but modern design that the designers were able to achieve with bright and warm colors, as well as the raw wood and metal accents.  Even the metal framing on the house is really inviting, sort of like a modern ski lodge.

The whole house is also furnished in Ethan Allen furniture!

I just had to share these amazing pillows with you I designed for my client’s Family Room.  I can’t wait to get pictures of them in the actual room, but isn’t this fabric so cool?

I have this amazing client who just moved to DC from Jordan!  He owns a cupcake shop in Jordan and plans to open up a branch here in DC too!  … and you all know how much I love cupcakes, I even posted about it here!  Once its open (hopefully this year!), I will definitely share pictures.

Anyway, Fadi contacted me while still living over seas and we pulled this gorgeous design together through tons of phone calls and emails.  Considering we were designing for a space neither of us had actually seen yet, it couldn’t have turned out more perfect!

This bright, cheerful, and elegant room reflects his personality perfectly!  What cupcake flavor would I call this?… Definitely not vanilla.

I recently had a client come to me who needs help designing the family room in her new condo.  Kim has just turned 28, started a new government job, and feels like it is finally time to buy some “big girl furniture” and to get rid of the ol’ Ikea and college hand-me-down junk.

Designed by Julien Macdonald for Graham & Brown

I decided to post about this project because Kim and I have a very similar aesthetic and I really connected with what she has envisioned- “mature”, “sophisticated”, and “elegant” were the three words she said when I asked her to describe what she had envisioned.  In other words, she likes a feminine yet refined look with a modern twist.

(I want to point out that she did not want the TV to be the focal point in the room.)

Kim’s Famly Room floor plan

I just love taking traditional pieces but updating them with a modern and graphic fabric and bold paint!

I achieved this look by combining clean modern pieces and dark woods with accents (like the floor lamp) that have a more organic shape.

I finally got around to taking pictures of my client, Gina and Chuck’s, new Living Room… and it turned out gorgeous (well I think so anyways)!

If you couldn’t tell by now, purple is clearly one of my favorite colors and it just so happens that this was the accent color they selected!  I promise I didn’t sway them in this direction, they just wanted something unusual and elegant- I think that is what we achieved.  See the finish product below.

I love the clean taupe and ivory palette we did with the saturated pop of purple!  And how fabolous is the purple zebra print ottoman with the silver nailhead trim?

I know, we are getting around to window treatments soon.
