Now that it the crisp Fall air has finally settled in, its time to get those fireplaces roaring again!  I think that sitting in front of the fire at the end of a long day is possibly one of my favorite things.

And because the fireplace is usually the focal point in most rooms, decorating it for the Fall is just one more way to welcome in the best season of the year!  Here are the 3 key elements to a perfectly balanced and festive fireplace mantle…

#1 Centerpiece

Usually a large mirror or piece of art is the best place to start.

#2 Weight

Adding weight to the sides of the centerpiece is necessary to balance out the mantle.   Accessories such as candlesticks or twigs in a vase is a great way to add weight (and height).  Even hanging a collection of smaller pieces of art on the sides of your centerpiece is a creative idea!

#3 Filler

Filler can be anything from books, to smaller plants or vases, or seasonal fillers like leaves or pumpkins!  Usually placing a collection of objects looks great.

I have noticed an abundance lately of agate accessories!  These really take me back to my childhood growing up in Tucson, AZ when my family would take trips to museums and I would always be mesmerized by the little gems in the gift shops.  The different shapes, colors, and shimmers really caught my attention, “isn’t Nature amazing?” my mom always say.

Needless to say, I am really excited that these geological rocks have emerged from the Science classrooms into our homes!  Not only do they add some color, but can be functional as well!  Take a look…

Georgetown HomeGoods Maxx

Georgetown HomeGoods Maxx

FINALLY!  The new Home Goods/ TJXX opened up in Georgetown!  9/8 was their grand opening and you know I was right there waiting to get in.  You know me, I went straight past all the clothes and into the Home Goods side of the store.

Home Good Lobby

Home Good Lobby

I think that my favorite part is the lobby!  I love the mirrors leading down the escalator, so funky.  The whole store is vibrant and bright, and of course, all of the (lets be honest) cheap fall and Halloween products are so fun.

Being in there got me so excited about Halloween, I mean, how could it NOT?  Its only September still, right?

And how cute is the wrapping paper?  Only $2.99?!  Are you serious!  I had to buy a few.

So of course, I was surfing around online looking for accents for my home and landed on Wayfair.com.  This site has so much stuff!  It’s a bit overwhelming, but you can almost always find what you are looking for, or get inspired by some funky products.

Anyway, today I noticed an “Ideas & Advice” link on the home page that offered insight as to what types of pieces people should be spending money on while home decorating, and what pieces you could save on.

This is what I always tell my clients!   It was so great to see it broken down on such a large website so I got pretty excited and decided to post about it (thanks Wayfair!).

1. The Sofa-

“Sofas should be durable and comfortable. Choose a neutral sofa without a lot of embellishments to ensure that it will fit with your changing style and tastes.
Look for cotton, wool, and leather sofas that will stand the test of time (and kids!). While linen upholstery gives off a casual feel, the fabric wrinkles easily and won’t withstand lots of wear and tear. Silk is delicate and must be cleaned professionally when it gets dirty.”
2. Rugs-
“Since they’re usually placed in high-traffic areas, it’s important to choose a durable rug. Handmade, 100% wool rugs can last a lifetime, while less expensive rugs made from synthetic materials will fall apart after a few years of use.”

3. The Bed-
“We spend nearly one-third of our lives in bed. So, why not make it the most luxurious and relaxing experience possible?
Selecting a comfortable and long-lasting mattress is the first step. After that, soft and cozy bed linens (such as sheets, duvet covers, and shams) will create a lavish spot to rest your head at the end of the day.”

4. The Dining Table-
“There are two reasons why dining tables make this list: 1. They’re the focal point of a dining room or kitchen. 2. From spills and hot dishes to scratches and nicks, dining tables take a beating, especially if they’re used every day.
Pricier tables can often be the most durable since they’re usually made with solid wood (instead of veneers), thick metal, or even topped with stone, such as marble or granite.”

5. Window Treatments-
“Rooms feel complete and more sophisticated with correctly fitting drapes or curtains adorning the windows. Whether you prefer the simple panel, or a more ornate curtain and valence pairing, find the window treatment that’s right for you!”
Yes!! I completely agree with all of these things, and the reasons why!  When it comes to artwork, lamps, pillows, window hardware, etc, it’s O.K. to go the less expensive rout if you are on a strict budget.  These are the accents that are easily changed when you get board and crave new color anyway.
