When it comes time for you to select a countertop and eventually a backsplash for your kitchen, there are several things you need to consider before committing!
Most people love the look of a granite countertop and real estate agents will argue that they increase the resale value of one’s home (take it from me, Taylor my boyfriend is a broker AND a contractor!). However, granite can also be a somewhat personal thing for some people because there is so much color and texture variation and it is such a permanent fixture and focal point in the home.
Some alternatives (but definitely not all) to a granite countertop is quartz, or dare I say it, Formica. Quartz and Formica countertops come in several solid finishes which eliminates the textural preference (or not) of granite. These also leave open the option to use a patterned backsplash if desired. Please take it from me, a patterned backsplash never works with a granite counter top! More in this later…
So, when selecting a countertop it is important to ask yourself one question, “how timeless will this be?” It is easy to change paint and artwork, but very costly to change the countertop if in, say, 10 years you think it looks “dated”.
Here is a great short quiz I found on Better Homes and Gardens to help you figure out what the best material is for your use! http://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/countertop-material-finder/
